Message from immediate past President

Eddie Govender

(President: 2015-2020)

The occasion of a 50th Anniversary is a huge milestone in any organisation’s achievement and for us in Silverglen, it is no different.

I salute, with heartfelt gratitude, the visionaries who, all those years ago, had the foresight to start this organisation. Sadly, some of them are no longer with us today. They have certainly left behind a wonderful legacy for the community of Silverglen.

I also want to acknowledge and thank all those individuals who have made huge sacrifices: they include our affiliates, The Silverglen Women’s Forum, The Silverglen Community Safety Forum, and The Silverglen Senior Citizens, who have contributed immensely to achieving the dream by the sterling work they do.

During these 50 years there have been vast changes and some sensational events in the world: man has been to the moon and back; huge advancement in technology and the end of apartheid in South Africa, to name a few!

However, the greatest challenge to our very existence must certainly be that of climate change, which, if not given the required urgent attention, will probably see the end of this world as we know it. Pollution of the environment and devastation of forests have become the biggest threat to mankind.

As we, the current generation, hand the baton over to the younger generation, we ask you to hold this fine institution in high regard and with your own brand of experience and expertise, take it to greater heights so that over the next fifty years, your children and grandchildren experience that, which we do now.

In closing let me leave you with the words of the GREAT MAHATHMA GANDHI:

“Be the change you want to see in the world”

These words still have the same impact today as it did then, more than a century ago.

I thank you,
