Silverglen Community Safety Forum

The Silverglen Community Safety Forum (SCSF) was formed in June 2005 as Sector 5 of the Bayview Community Policing Forum. National government had recommended residents formulate CPF’s due to resource constraints at SAPS. A mass meeting was held on 22 June 2005 at SCDIFA with over 50 resident volunteers. For some reason the Chairman and the secretary elected at the mass meeting abandoned their positions whilst Kenny Venkatasen appointed as the Treasurer pursued to establish an interim working team to fight crime in Silverglen. The team consisted of Kenny Ventakasen, Steven Naidoo and Morgan Govender eventually incorporating more local residents to assist in crime fighting.

Due to the escalation in crime in the Silverglen area during early 2006, a few residents met once again to form an interim committee. At the meeting, Kenny Venkatasen was elected as Chairperson and Steven Naidoo as Secretary.

In May 2006 a bunny chow fun raising event was held to raise funds for the purchase of two-way radios. Some doctors in the area also sponsored two way radios. A Business Breakfast was held at Sol Namara Hotel in July 2007 to raise funds for the purchase of equipment. At the meeting, it was discussed that crime cannot be fought by individuals alone, but only through an integration process involving SAPS, security companies and the community.

During the absence of Kenny Venkatasen on holiday in the UK, the late Vijay Sivakumoor was elected as acting chairperson. Logan Pillay was elected as Chairperson BCPF at the AGM held on the 23 May 2007, with Steven Naidoo as Secretary and Rishi Karan as Treasurer.

The Silverglen area was split into 2 sub sectors ie Sector A and Sector B. These sectors were established to implement a number of strategies to help fight crime. During the 19th BCPF AGM held in April 2007, members from Silverglen were elected on the executive committee. A few residents from Silverglen were in training as reservists for the area. At the next AGM in July 2008, Bruce Naidoo was elected Chairperson, Shafee as secretary and Logan Pillay as treasurer. In July 2010 Steven Naidoo was elected Chairperson, Ragini Naidoo as Secretary and Raj Pather as Treasurer. Currently, the Chairperson is Nerish Lukhun with vice Chair, Nieshlin Naidoo, secretary Sudesh Rathilal, Treasurer Steven Naidoo and PRO Videsh Sharma.
