Silverglen Civic Association has remained a vibrant organisation for 50 years, providing civic leadership and activism in the struggle for amenities, safety, security and environmental health.
The members have readily committed themselves to projects to resist increases in property rates, promote and actively participate in clean up campaigns, set up street committees and co-ordinate security patrols to reduce criminal activity in the sprawling suburb.
A notable campaign fought by the Silverglen Civic and Mobeni Heights Civic, which extended over two decades, was the mitigation and control of toxic substances and the eventual closure of the BulBul landsite. The frequent fires, toxic smells and spillage on the streets of Chatsworth drove the determination to shut down the landfill operation. The commitment of the executive and members of the Silverglen Civic was fully rewarded with the closure of the landfill site.
Other notable successes have been the fight against crime and the security in the nature reserve. Presently, the tardiness of the Council in attending to storm damage to road infrastructure has become a consuming concern to the Association.
The struggle for better amenities, a crime free neighbourhood and acceptable facilities remains a civic commitment for the members of the Association. Given their history of success and accomplishment, there is little doubt that the Association will continue to fulfil its mandate over the next 50 years. In this, I wish the Association every success in its onward struggle for the development of the leading neighbourhood in Chatsworth.
